What is CPD?
CPD stands for "Continuing Professional Development." Many professional bodies require their members to undergo a programme of CPD to ensure that practitioners are always up-to-date with the latest technology and legislation, and maintain their skills in their field of practice. In my case, this involves attending courses and conferences on the following:
- Updated technology (translation software, terminology management etc...)
- Legal and financial terminology (e.g. updated accounting terms)
- Different aspects of language (literary, colloquial, cyber language)
- Medical and pharmaceutical disciplines
- New technologies such as PC-based subtitling, MP3 transcription In addition, a good translator needs to revisit at regular intervals the country or countries where each of his/her languages are spoken and to attend courses dedicated to each specific language. This is in addition to reading online newspapers, keeping abreast of the changing and expanding language by watching films, documentaries and fact-based programmes. |
